Here in southern Minnesota the soybeans are beginning to change color. Soon they will drop their leaves and be ready for the combines, trucks, and augers. And the corn crop will be next. The last several weeks have been drier than normal, so all of this will likely happen sooner than usual. We are all hopeful for a bountiful harvest!
Now is a good time to check your equipment for safety. This would apply to ANY equipment you operate during harvest. (Augers, grain bins, combines, wagons, grain carts, trucks, grain dryers, silage blowers, tillage, stalk choppers, etc.) Take a few hours TODAY and inspect all of that equipment. You are looking for missing or defective shields, broken parts, loose covers, etc. Isn’t your livelihood dependent upon your health and the health of those who work with you? The small amount of time you spend making equipment safe will PAY YOU BACK!
Many farm equipment manufacturers offer replacement safety equipment at NO CHARGE! All you need to do is ask. If a shield or guard is missing or defective, call the manufacturer, or your local dealer, about getting a replacement. Maybe the piece of equipment is older, and the manufacturer is no longer in business. If that’s your situation, then it’s time to call your local dealer and replace that old implement with a new, modern, safe version. Your life may depend on it.
